Students to Access STEM Opportunities in San Antonio at SACNAS Community College Day

In advance of its 45th anniversary celebration and annual conference to promote STEM diversity, Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) will host its annual Community College Day, a day-long academic event to prepare minority community college students for STEM careers. The event will take place prior the opening of 2018 SACNAS – The National Diversity in STEM Conference, the country’s largest multidisciplinary and multicultural STEM diversity event convening nearly 4,000 STEM leaders, scientists, academics, researchers, professionals and college students at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center from October 11-13, 2018.

A 2013 report from Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce estimates that 35% of all job openings will require a bachelor’s degree or higher by 2020. The report also emphasizes that while jobs in STEM are among the fastest growing occupations, they will also require advanced education. Given that community college plays an important role for Hispanic and Native Americans communities, ensuring underrepresented minority students have access to the tools and resources to succeed in this educational setting represents a crucial step toward achieving true diversity in STEM.

The SACNAS Community College Day is a free event open to all community college students and will include networking, inspirational talks, workshops, and a resource fair with information on internships, scholarships, and financial resources.
